| Obverse description | Cast iron cash coin of standard round form with a central square perforation. The four-character reign title legend 元佑通寶 (Yuanyou Tongbao) is arranged in running script (xingshu) in the four quadrants surrounding the square hole, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left in the traditional Chinese manner. The characters are boldly rendered with the fluid, slightly cursive strokes characteristic of xingshu calligraphy. The coin displays a raised inner rim framing the central perforation and a raised outer rim enclosing the field, both cast in the typical Northern Song fashion. The surface exhibits an aged iron patina with areas of rust and oxidation consistent with the iron composition. |
