| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square rim, with four boldly cast Chinese ideograms disposed in the four cardinal positions around the central hole, read clockwise from the top in the archaic Seal script (zhuanshu) style. The four characters 元符通寶 (Yuanfu Tongbao) are rendered with the characteristic rounded, flowing strokes of zhuanshu, each occupying its own quadrant of the field. A plain raised outer rim borders the entire face, framing the inscription with the formal regularity typical of Northern Song imperial coinage. The overall design exhibits the refined calligraphic quality associated with coinage produced under Emperor Zhezong during the Yuanfu reign period (1098–1100). |
