Obverse description Central square hole surrounded by a raised square rim, flanked by four Chinese seal-script (zhuanshu) ideograms arranged in cruciform fashion and read clockwise from the top: 元 (Yuan), 豐 (Feng), 通 (Tong), 寶 (Bao), forming the reign-era inscription 'Yuanfeng Tongbao.' The characters are boldly cast in elegant seal script, a calligraphic style favoured during the Northern Song dynasty, with strokes of uniform weight and rounded terminals. A plain outer rim encircles the entire design. The flat field shows natural casting texture consistent with Song dynasty bronze coinage production.
