| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square boss, with four bold Chinese characters in kaishu (regular script) disposed in the four cardinal positions around the central hole, reading clockwise from the top: 熙 (Xi), 通 (Tong), 寶 (Bao), 寧 (Ning), together forming the reign-era inscription 熙寧通寶. The characters are well-defined with strong, squared strokes characteristic of Northern Song imperial casting. The field between the inner square boss and the outer raised rim is plain and undecorated. A broad, slightly irregular outer rim frames the entire design, consistent with iron-cast Song dynasty cash coinage. |
