Shaoxing was the reign title of Emperor Gaozong, founder of the Southern Song dynasty after the Jurchen Jin had seized the north and captured his father and brother in the catastrophic Jingkang Incident of 1127. The court fled south, eventually settling at Lin'an — modern Hangzhou — and iron coinage became increasingly common as copper supplies from northern mines were now under Jin control.
The Li script designation distinguishes this from concurrent Seal and Running script issues struck simultaneously at multiple furnaces, a Song practice that creates considerable variety within the type.
