Additional information

Shaosheng was the reign period of Emperor Zhezong, who reclaimed power from the conservative faction that had dominated under his grandmother Empress Dowager Gao's regency. The Shaosheng iron cash issues reflect the dynasty's renewed push to implement Wang Anshi's New Policies, which required flooding the economy with coin — iron was struck precisely because copper supplies were perpetually strained by both military demand and smuggling across northern borders into Liao territory.

Iron Song cash corrodes aggressively, and survivors with legible seal script are considerably scarcer than catalogue frequency suggests.
