| Obverse description | Four Chinese ideograms in Regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform fashion around a central square perforation, reading clockwise from the top: 乾, 寶, 道, 元, forming the reign title and denomination inscription 乾道元寶 (Qiandao Yuanbao). The characters are rendered in a bold, upright style typical of Southern Song dynasty cast coinage. The field is plain, and the coin is bordered by a raised inner rim encircling the square hole and an outer rim at the coin's edge. |
