| Obverse description | Four Chinese ideograms in Regular script (Kaishu) arranged symmetrically around the central square hole, reading clockwise from the top: 嘉 (Jiā), 泰 (Tài), 元 (Yuán), 寶 (Bǎo), forming the reign title and denomination legend 嘉泰元寶 (Jiatai Yuanbao). The characters are boldly cast in relief within a plain, raised rim, with the ideograms occupying the four cardinal positions relative to the perforation. The calligraphic style is well-formed and characteristic of Southern Song imperial coin production. The field is flat and unadorned beyond the central square perforation. |

| Reverse description | The reverse displays two Chinese ideograms in Regular script (Kaishu) positioned above and below the central square hole: 同 (Tóng) above the perforation and 元 (Yuán) below, identifying the issuing mint and the year of issue respectively. The characters are cast in bold relief against a plain, flat field, framed by a raised outer rim. The composition is austere and functional, consistent with Song dynasty mint-marking conventions. The square central perforation is cleanly defined with straight, raised edges. |
