| 正面描述 | Circular cast bronze coin featuring a central square perforation surrounded by a raised square rim. The four-character reign title legend 嘉泰通寶 (Jiatai Tongbao) is arranged symmetrically in regular script (kaishu) around the central hole, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 嘉 (top), 通 (right), 寶 (bottom), 泰 (left). The characters are bold and well-defined against a flat, unadorned field. The coin is bordered by a raised outer rim, and the surfaces display characteristic green and brown patination consistent with buried bronze of the Song dynasty. |

The Jiatai reign period (1201–1204) of Emperor Ningzong saw continued pressure on Southern Song finances from the costs of maintaining the Huai River frontier against the Jurchen Jin dynasty. Cash production was ramped up across multiple furnaces, and the inclusion of a reign year on the reverse — rather than a simple denomination mark — was a deliberate administrative practice allowing the court to track inflationary output by year and recall debased issues when necessary.
Hartill 17.492 specifically denotes the dated variety, distinguishing it from the undated 2-cash Jiatai pieces. The year characters cycle through all four reign years, making complete dated sets a recognized collecting pursuit.
