The Dazhong Tongbao series was issued by Zhu Yuanzhang before he formally declared the Ming dynasty in 1368 — coins struck under his short-lived "Great Zhong" polity, which he established as a rebel warlord still fighting to consolidate control over southern China. The "Zhe" mint mark denotes Zhejiang, a strategically vital region whose capture was central to Zhu's eventual victory over rival warlords and the collapsing Yuan administration. Once the Ming was proclaimed, the Dazhong series was superseded by Hongwu Tongbao, making the entire issue a product of fewer than seven years of production.
