Obverse description Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square rim, with four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) disposed in the four quadrants around the central hole, read in the traditional order: top, bottom, right, left. The four characters 崇禎通寶 (Chongzhen Tongbao) are rendered in bold, well-defined relief typical of southern Ming casting workshops. The field between the characters and the outer rim is plain and slightly concave, characteristic of the southern-type flan. The coin is struck on a broad, flat planchet with a clearly defined outer rim encircling the entire design.
