The Banco Central de Bolivia has periodically redenominated and restructured its coinage series since the catastrophic hyperinflation of the mid-1980s, when annual inflation briefly exceeded 20,000 percent and the boliviano itself was reintroduced in 1987 at a rate of one million old pesos per unit.
