Bolivia reintroduced the boliviano in 1987 after the catastrophic hyperinflation of the mid-1980s had rendered the previous peso boliviano worthless — at its peak in 1985, annual inflation exceeded 20,000%. The 2 bolivianos denomination was part of the reconstituted series issued under the Banco Central, which had been granted formal statutory independence in 1995 partly to prevent the monetary chaos from recurring.
