Venezuela's silver bolívar coinage of this period was already living on borrowed time when these were struck. The country's oil revenues were transforming the economy rapidly, and rising silver prices through the early 1960s made the metal content of circulating coins an increasing liability for the Banco Central. By 1965 — the last year of this type — Venezuela was actively planning the switch to nickel-clad coinage that arrived in 1967, rendering the entire .835 silver series obsolete within a few years of its last strike.
