| Obverse description | Central device consisting of a fasces bound with crossed straps and surmounted by a Phrygian liberty cap, the whole flanked symmetrically by flowering and foliate sprigs extending to either side. The circular legend REPVBLICA · ROMANA · runs around the periphery in Latin capitals, separated by decorative stops. The reeded edge is visible at the rim. The overall composition reflects the revolutionary republican iconography adopted during the French-influenced Roman Republic of 1798–1799. |
