Issued to mark the International Year of the Trees, this commemorative was struck as Thailand was accelerating a national reforestation campaign under royal patronage — deforestation in the northern highlands had become acute enough by the mid-1980s that the Thai government had begun restricting commercial logging concessions. The coin's timing aligned with a broader UNEP initiative that year encouraging member states to issue public awareness material, coins among them.
