Issued to mark the Rajamangala ceremony of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, held in July 1988 when he surpassed the 42-year reign of King Rama IV to become the longest-reigning monarch in Thai history at that point. The ceremony's name — Rajamangala, meaning royal auspiciousness — was specifically coined for the occasion, as no established precedent existed for celebrating such a milestone in the Chakri dynasty.
