Basel's klippe issues of the early 1620s were emergency siege coinage in the broadest sense — not struck under military duress, but produced as the city navigated the financial turbulence of the Thirty Years' War then consuming the surrounding Holy Roman Empire. The square-cut flan was a deliberate administrative choice, distinguishing city-authorized emergency issues from regular round minting, and allowing rapid production without full die preparation overhead.

The Winter references separate two die marriages across the 1623–1624 span, suggesting continuous if intermittent production rather than a single campaign.
