The Bank of Abkhazia has issued collector coins since the mid-2000s, operating in a territory whose international recognition remains disputed by most UN member states — Georgia considers it occupied, while Russia recognized its independence in 2008 following the brief August war. The apsar itself was introduced as a parallel currency to the Russian ruble, functioning largely as a numismatic vehicle rather than a circulating medium.
Campanula paradoxa is endemic to the limestone gorges of the western Caucasus, with its range centered almost entirely within Abkhazia's own borders.
