| Additional information |
Abkhazia occupies a peculiar position in numismatics: a partially recognized breakaway state that has issued collector coinage since 2009 despite having no internationally accepted sovereignty and using the Russian ruble as its actual circulating currency. The Bank of Abkhazia exists primarily to produce these pieces for the numismatic market rather than to manage any independent monetary system.
The apsar denomination itself was created specifically for collector issues, with no circulating equivalent.
