The inscription PRISONERS OF WAR arcs across the upper portion of the guilloche border, with CAMP completing the arc at the lower portion, and the denomination As.2 appears in cartouches at both left and right margins. | Opmerkingen |
No. 24 POW Camp at Clement Town, in the foothills of the United Himalayas near Dehra Dun, held Italian prisoners captured primarily in the North African and East African campaigns. Camp-issued scrip of this type functioned as an internal canteen currency — prisoners could earn small amounts through approved labor and spend within the camp, with the British administration maintaining control by keeping real currency entirely out of circulation among the internees.
Clement Town scrip is among the more obscure of the Indian POW camp issues. The 2 Annas denomination points to a functioning internal price structure, which varied considerably between camps.
