India's post-independence coinage transition involved extensive pattern striking in 1947–1949 as the new government evaluated designs and alloys before committing to production. Brass was among the metals tested for the anna series before cupro-nickel was ultimately chosen for circulation issues. Most 1949 patterns remained in government or museum collections, and few reached the open market.
The 2 annas denomination itself was discontinued in 1957 when India decimalized, making the entire anna series short-lived under the Republic.
