Obverse description Central field bears the state emblem of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan, depicting a stylised mihrab (prayer niche) rising from a radiant sunrise, flanked by sheaves of wheat bound with a ribbon at the base, and surmounted by a five-pointed star. The entire device is rendered in bold relief with fine detail in the wheat ears and architectural elements. A curved Arabic legend arcs across the upper field, reading the name and title of the state, with the Afghan solar-calendar date 1359 inscribed in Eastern Arabic numerals at the bottom of the field.
