These coins were struck during the Saur Revolution period, when a Soviet-backed coup in April 1978 overthrew and killed President Mohammed Daoud Khan, replacing his republic with the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. The new government of Nur Muhammad Taraki moved quickly to issue currency reflecting the political transition, though internal factional violence within the ruling People's Democratic Party meant the regime itself collapsed within two years.
The short production window of 1978–1979 ended when Hafizullah Amin seized power, then was himself killed during the Soviet invasion in December 1979.
