Kaboepaten Laboehan Batoe was one of dozens of regional Indonesian authorities that printed their own emergency currency during the revolutionary period following the 1945 declaration of independence. The Dutch blockade had effectively cut off the new Republic's central supply lines, forcing regencies and municipalities to issue local scrip simply to keep trade moving. This 2,500 Roepiah note from Rantau Prapat — the administrative seat of Labuhan Batu in North Sumatra — was produced and redeemable locally, giving it essentially no circulation beyond the regency.
Printing facilities in these circumstances were rudimentary. Paper stock, ink quality, and typesetting varied dramatically even within a single series, which makes condition assessment genuinely complicated for this type.
