Urrea de Gaén is a small municipality in the province of Teruel, Aragón, and like hundreds of similarly sized Spanish towns it was forced to produce its own emergency fractional currency during the Civil War after metallic coinage vanished from circulation almost entirely by mid-1936. The Consejo Municipal issues from this region are among the more poorly documented in the Gari catalogue — survival rates are low, and authenticated examples with the handstamp intact are genuinely uncommon.
The handstamp was the issuing authority's primary validation mechanism, applied locally after printing. Its absence or fading is the most common defect encountered in the series.
