Luxembourg established its university remarkably late for a European nation of its size — the University of Luxembourg was founded only in 2003, making it one of the youngest national universities on the continent. The institution was built partly to stem the long-standing brain drain of Luxembourgish students leaving for Liège, Trier, and Brussels, a pattern that had persisted for generations due to the absence of any domestic higher education infrastructure.
