Belgium's hosting of the 1920 Antwerp Games was a deliberate political act as much as a sporting one — the IOC awarded the Olympics to a country still physically scarred by German occupation, and the Games opened just two years after Armistice. Germany, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire were excluded from competition entirely. It was also at Antwerp that the Olympic oath was first administered and the five-ring flag flown for the first time at an opening ceremony.
