Belgium issued this piece to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Western Europe in May 1945, a date of particular resonance for a country that had endured occupation twice within living memory by 1945. The 2.50 euro denomination is specific to Belgium — one of very few eurozone members to use it regularly for commemorative circulation coinage — introduced partly to fill a gap between the standard 2 euro commemorative and higher-value collector pieces.
