Reverse description Central device consists of the Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield bearing quinas and castles — superimposed on an armillary sphere, the whole supported by a stylized frame of four elongated lance or sword motifs extending diagonally from the central device. The circular legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA arcs along the upper periphery. The date of issue appears in the lower exergual area, flanked by two raised dots.
