Göbekli Tepe in southeastern Turkey was built around 9600 BCE, predating Stonehenge by roughly seven millennia and upending the long-held assumption that monumental architecture required settled agricultural societies. Its excavation, led by German archaeologist Klaus Schmidt from 1996 until his death in 2014, forced a wholesale reassessment of the Neolithic timeline.
