Fuat Sezgin spent eleven years imprisoned and under professional suppression in Turkey before emigrating to Frankfurt in 1961, where he eventually produced his seventeen-volume Geschichte des arabischen Schrifttums — the most comprehensive catalogue of medieval Islamic scientific manuscripts ever assembled. The Turkish state had effectively driven out the scholar it later chose to commemorate in bronze.
Sezgin died in June 2018, and this issue followed the next year as part of Turkey's broader rehabilitation of his reputation, which included the renaming of institutions in his honor.
