The 19th of May 1919 is the date Mustafa Kemal stepped ashore at Samsun on the Black Sea coast, an act the Turkish Republic formally designates as the starting point of the War of Independence. The Ottoman authorities had sent him there to oversee the disarmament of nationalist irregulars — he used the assignment to organize resistance instead. The centennial of that landing in 2019 produced a wave of commemorative issues across Turkish state institutions, of which this coin is one.
