Gaziantep's designation as a "Gazi" (veteran) city dates to the Turkish War of Independence, when the town — then called Antep — resisted French occupation forces from 1919 through 1921. The Grand National Assembly formally awarded the honorific prefix in February 1921, one of only two cities in Turkey to receive the distinction by legislative decree.
