The P#R2 designation signals something the denomination alone doesn't — this note was part of Indonesia's regional currency experiment, a short-lived parallel issue circulated in specific outer island territories rather than nationally. Jakarta used these fractional rupiah denominations in part to address the chronic small-change shortage that plagued rural and island economies throughout the early 1960s, where coins rarely penetrated far from Java.
Regional issues of this period were produced in limited quantities and frequently worn to destruction in active use. Survivors in any condition are underrepresented in Western collections.
