The Curaçaosche Bank was established in 1828 to serve the Dutch colonial territories in the Caribbean, and by 1918 it remained the sole note-issuing authority for Curaçao and the surrounding islands. The 2½ Gulden denomination — the familiar "rijksdaalder" unit carried over from Netherlands monetary tradition — was practical small-paper currency for an island economy heavily dependent on the oil trade that would only accelerate after the Shell refinery opened at Willemstad in 1918.
