Maison du Colon was a colonial trading house operating in French West Africa, and notes like this one fall into the category of emergency commercial scrip rather than government-issued currency — produced by private merchants to address the acute small-denomination shortage that gripped the region after Vichy France's metropolitan supply chains collapsed. The pink paper distinguishes this denomination within the series and was a deliberate practical choice, not an aesthetic one.
These notes circulated in a very confined geographic and commercial radius, essentially functioning as store credit that the local population was often left with no practical option but to accept.
