Schiedam de Noord was one of a series of Dutch municipal tokens issued under the "Queen's Quarters" urban renewal program of the late 1990s, in which participating neighborhoods received limited-edition 2½ euro pieces tied to local regeneration initiatives. Schiedam, a city long defined by its jenever distilling industry, saw the de Noord district targeted for significant infrastructure investment during this period.

These pieces circulated locally as genuine tender within participating communities — a rare modern experiment in hyperlocal currency within an EU member state on the eve of euro adoption.
