The design pays tribute to the historic windmill originally built in 1781 and restored in 1901, as indicated by the dates flanking the upper portion of the legend. The inscription DE NIEUWE PALMBOOM is displayed prominently across the centre and lower field in bold raised lettering. The overall composition is enclosed within a plain border, consistent with the medallic character of this fantasy issue. |

Schiedam's Nieuwe Palmboom distillery was one of the last survivors of a jenever industry that once supported over 400 distilleries in the city during the 18th century. By 1998, that number had collapsed to a handful. This coin belongs to the Dutch "famous cities" 2½ euro series issued in the run-up to euro adoption, a deliberate effort to catalog regional industrial identity before the guilder disappeared.
