Stromeyer & Co. was a linen and textile firm in Konstanz, not a bank — one of hundreds of German commercial enterprises that issued their own emergency currency during the hyperinflation of 1923 when the Reichsbank simply could not print fast enough to meet demand. The two-million-mark face value, astronomical by any pre-war measure, was already being overtaken by inflation within days of issue; by November 1923, notes denominated in billions were in circulation.
Konstanz sits on the Swiss border, which gave local commerce an acute awareness of exchange-rate collapse — the Swiss franc had become the de facto reference currency for anyone transacting across the Rhine.
