Comments

The Landesbank der Rheinprovinz was one of dozens of regional and municipal institutions that issued emergency Notgeld during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank could not print fast enough to meet demand. By August of that year, denominations that would have seemed absurd twelve months earlier were already too small for a loaf of bread. The two-million-mark note exists precisely because the inflation outpaced the presses — many such issues were obsolete within weeks of printing.

Düsseldorf-printed throughout, which is consistent with the Landesbank's own operations in the Rhine Province. The designer credit to Schwarzkopf is atypical for provincial emergency issues, most of which went uncredited.
