Kreis Schleswig was one of hundreds of German rural administrative districts that resorted to Notgeld during the hyperinflation of 1923, when Reichsbank currency was being outpaced by rising prices faster than it could be printed and distributed. The Kreisausschuss — the district committee — had the legal authority to authorize emergency municipal issues, and six- and seven-figure denominations had become routine by the time this note was authorized.
L. Handorff of Kiel handled a number of northern German Notgeld contracts during this period. The embossed stamp was the issuing authority's primary hedge against counterfeiting — modest, but practical for a short-lived instrument nobody expected to survive the stabilization.
