Ichtershausen's Thüringische Nadel- und Stahlwaaren-Fabrik — a needle and steel goods manufacturer — issued this note during the hyperinflation peak of 1923, when industrial firms across Thuringia were printing their own emergency wages simply to pay workers before the money lost value in transit from bank to factory floor. The printer, Otto Böttner of nearby Arnstadt, handled notgeld work for several small Thuringian issuers during this period.
At two million Mark, the denomination reflects mid-1923 inflation levels rather than the astronomical figures that followed by autumn.
