Greiz was a small industrial district in eastern Thuringia, and like hundreds of German municipalities in 1923, it was forced to issue its own emergency currency — Notgeld — simply to meet payroll as hyperinflation rendered Reichsbank notes functionally worthless within days of printing. The 2,000,000 Mark denomination places this note in the acute phase of the crisis, roughly mid-1923, before the collapse accelerated into the billions and trillions by autumn.

District-level issues like this one were authorised locally, often printed by regional commercial printers with no specialized banknote security infrastructure. Paper quality and print registration vary considerably across surviving examples as a direct consequence.
