| Opmerkingen |
Wiesbaden's municipal emergency money — Notgeld — was a direct consequence of the Reichsbank's inability to supply sufficient currency during the hyperinflation of 1923. By August of that year, denominations had to be reissued almost weekly as the purchasing power of any given note collapsed within days of printing. The city itself, not a bank, became a currency issuer out of administrative necessity.
Two million marks sounds extraordinary. In the summer of 1923, it would not have bought a loaf of bread for long.
