The date 'Stollberg i. E., 1. Stollberg's Amtshauptmannschaft — the district administrative authority in Saxony — issued this 2,000,000 Mark note in 1923 as Germany's hyperinflation rendered Reichsbank denominations obsolete almost weekly. These district-level emergency issues, known as Notgeld, were authorized by local bodies when central supply simply could not keep pace with demand for higher denominations.
Rats-Druckerei in nearby Glauchau was a practical choice — local commercial printers across Saxony were pressed into service for exactly this kind of short-run emergency work. By the time notes of this face value were being issued, the 2,000,000 Mark figure itself had a shelf life measured in days before purchasing power collapsed further.
