Ukraine's 1996 Olympic commemorative was issued the same year the country made its debut as an independent nation at the Atlanta Summer Games — its first Olympic appearance under its own flag after decades of competing as part of the Soviet bloc. The 2,000,000 karbovanets denomination reflects the extraordinary inflation Ukraine suffered following independence; by the time this coin was struck, the karbovanets had so thoroughly collapsed that it was replaced entirely by the hryvnia later that same year.
