Issued on the tenth anniversary of the April 1986 reactor explosion, this coin belongs to a commemorative program the National Bank of Ukraine launched in the mid-1990s as the newly independent state worked to establish a distinct numismatic identity. The denomination — two million karbovantsiv — reflects the catastrophic inflation Ukraine endured before the hryvnia replaced the karbovanets in September 1996, just months after this coin was struck. It is one of the last issues denominated in that currency.
