Cyprus came under British administration in 1878 as part of the Cyprus Convention with the Ottoman Empire, but the island wasn't formally annexed until November 1914 — when Britain declared war on the Ottoman Empire and could no longer maintain the polite fiction of Ottoman suzerainty. The 18-piastre denomination itself is a curiosity of colonial monetary awkwardness: it equated to three shillings in sterling, a conversion rate baked in to ease transactions between the local piastre system and British currency without abolishing either.
Production ceased in 1921, the year Cyprus was declared a Crown Colony.
