| Beschrijving voorzijde | Veiled and wreathed head of Demeter facing right, rendered in low relief characteristic of late Hellenistic provincial coinage. The goddess is adorned with a grain wreath encircling her head, and her veil is decorated with a prominent eight-pointed star, a common attribute of Demeter in Pontic iconography. The facial features, though worn, display the characteristic soft modelling of the period, with hair gathered beneath the veil. No legend appears on the obverse field. |

Tomis, the Black Sea colony later exiled to by Ovid in 8 AD, struck civic bronze through the late Republican period largely to service local trade in the western Pontic region. Rome's encroachment into Thrace and the upheaval of the Mithridatic Wars made autonomous civic coinage from cities like Tomis both politically fraught and commercially necessary during precisely this window.
